President Muizzu pledged to reclaim land in Kendhoo despite there being no available area left to reclaim, says MP Mauroof
MP Mauroof stated that the ongoing suspension of the Kendhoo harbor project remains a major concern for the local community. Highlighting the stagnation of projects initiated by the previous administration, he noted that the government’s tendency to showcase progress only during election cycles is a familiar pattern to the public. Mauroof further urged the authorities to expedite essential initiatives, such as resolving harbor difficulties, to address the most pressing needs of the people.

Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, has stated that while President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to reclaim land in B. Kendhoo, there is no further land available for reclamation. Instead, the MP emphasized that the residents' immediate priority is a swift solution to the ongoing challenges regarding the island's harbor.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, MP Mauroof stated that numerous development projects were undertaken in the island during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, with several initiatives successfully completed. However, he noted that following the change in government, these ongoing projects have come to a complete standstill.
Highlighting that the primary challenge currently facing the residents of Kendhoo is the harbor issue, MP Mauroof stated that while there is a desire to expedite the project, progress has stalled. He expressed that this remains a matter of significant concern.
Furthermore, Mauroof stated that President Muizzu made several pledges during his most recent visit to the island.
MP Mauroof stated that while a pledge was made to reclaim land in Kendhoo, this was not something requested by the residents. He further noted that there is no viable area left in Kendhoo for land reclamation.
However, during the visit, pledges were made to reclaim land in Kendhoo, develop the island's roads, and resume the mosque project that had stalled after being initiated by the MDP administration. Further commitments included resolving the island's housing crisis, establishing a Fire and Rescue Center, constructing a police station, and building a new council office. In addition to these promises, a formal signing ceremony was held involving a state-owned enterprise. I am uncertain, however, whether they were signing an actual agreement or merely a blank piece of paper.Mauroof Zakir, Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
MP Mauroof stated that with the upcoming local council elections, several projects are currently progressing at a snail's pace. He noted that the public had already witnessed this pattern during the parliamentary election campaign. He further remarked that the government's current conduct is nothing new to the citizens, asserting that the public is well aware of the underlying situation.
While many development projects in Kendhoo remain stalled, the contract for the island's harbor development was awarded to MTCC on August 11, 2025. The project, valued at MVR 119.3 million, is scheduled for completion within 450 days.
