President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that reclamation work at Giraavaru Lagoon, which had been suspended for a prolonged period, resumed on Friday morning.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, President Muizzu confirmed that reclamation activities had commenced and shared photographs and video footage showing work underway at the site.
The project is being carried out by Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC). The total area designated for reclamation under the project is 160 hectares. According to previous government disclosures, between 50 and 54 hectares had already been reclaimed before the project was halted. Under the current administration, CMCC was also awarded the Ras Malé reclamation project, with the agreement involving the allocation of land from both Hulhumalé and Ras Malé as compensation.
During a meeting with Machchangolhi residents in November 2025, Muizzu had stated that physical work on Giraavaru Lagoon would begin in early January and expressed confidence that the entire reclamation project would be completed by the end of March.
The current administration had earlier announced plans to introduce a new land-use plan for Giraavaru Lagoon, where land plots were initially allocated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The revised land-use plan was officially released earlier this week.
It is also noted that land reclamation projects in the Greater Malé Region, including Hulhumalé Phase III, Giraavaru Lagoon, and Ras Malé, were handed over after the termination of previous agreements governing these projects.
