Residents of Velidhoo island of Noonu atoll have voiced profound disillusionment, asserting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s actions consistently fall short of his public rhetoric.
On RaajjeTV’s “Haalu Kihineh?” programme, locals expressed growing frustration with the current administration’s governance, highlighting key grievances such as the soaring cost of living, shortages of essential medicines and multiple unfulfilled development promises for the island.
One resident pointed to extreme inflation, noting that even basic necessities, such as eggs, have become significantly more expensive, placing considerable financial strain on families. Rising electricity bills, despite minimal household usage, were also cited as a source of hardship.
Another resident observed that the cost of goods has surged since the administration took office, with high utility bills and centralized power fueling widespread concern. Many reported feeling increasingly intimidated when speaking out.
Concerns were also raised about the general state of national governance. Residents noted sharp price increases for clothing, food items and even small essentials, warning that granting the government a majority in upcoming council elections would likely worsen the situation. Currency devaluation and rising import costs were cited as additional pressures on household finances.
Local stakeholders in the tourism sector criticized government policies for stifling the island’s economic potential. Velidhoo relies heavily on domestic tourism, but current policies, they argued, favor only one type of tourism and undermine local initiatives, reflecting a lack of vision to support islands directly.
Other residents echoed these frustrations, emphasizing the difficulty in obtaining essential medicines for chronic illnesses under the current administration.
