A STELCO employee who suffered severe burns in a fire at the company’s Hulhumalé power plant on November 26 has died while receiving treatment in Thailand.
Ahmed Azmeel, 43, a supervisor at STELCO, passed away on Thursday at Bangkok Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment since being transported there for advanced care on November 30.
According to a statement issued by STELCO on the day of the incident, the fire occurred during work to resolve an issue with a switchgear.
The company described the switchgear as a device used to supply electricity to grids, similar to circuit breakers used in domestic power supply.
STELCO stated that both the company and the police are investigating the cause of the fire and noted its full cooperation with the police inquiry.
However, to date, neither STELCO nor the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has released any further information regarding the investigation.
Azmeel had served the company for more than 21 years.
