The fire that started in the building housing the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has spread to the first two floors of Green Building which houses the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that with the fire incident, the tin building housing the Ministry of Housing has been severely burnt. They also said that 90 percent of that building's fire has been extinguished. However, the fire is still burning on the second and third floors of Green Building which houses the Environment Ministry.
With the fire at the Ministry of Housing, some documents and other items from the Malé City Council office, which operates in the building, have been removed from the building.
In addition, MNDF says that a private residence called "Mahuma Villa", located opposite the tin building, has caught fire to some extent.
Regarding the fire incident, Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon told state media that information about the fire incident was received around 6:30am on Thursday, and the MNDF fire team began operations immediately.
Although the fire at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure building was brought under control, the tin-built structure has completely collapsed.
The block where the Housing Ministry is located is a block with many government offices. These include the Housing Ministry, the Environment Ministry, the now-nonoperational Maldives Land and Survey Authority, and an important office of the Malé City Council.
