A fire at L. Gan's Fenaka power plant on Wednesday damaged one of five generators
After the fire at the Gan Power Plant
Ahmed Zaki, President of L. Gan Council, has stated that the fire at the Fenaka power plant on the island, is believed to have originated near the diesel pump.
He added that the situation has since been resolved and power has been fully restored to the island.
The fire occurred on Wednesday afternoon, with electricity restored approximately eight hours later. Zaki clarified that power was back on after 11pm, noting that despite the fire, most generators remained operational. Only one generator was affected by the blaze.
The fire reportedly started in a section of a storeroom, spreading primarily between the ceiling and the roof. Wooden planks caught fire, causing substantial damage to the power plant building.
Zaki also noted that some pipes of a generator located near the burning storeroom melted, but there were no other significant issues.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that one of the generators in operation sustained irreparable damage due to the incident.
In addition to the generator, the fire near the diesel pump also caused significant impact to an external diesel tank.
Power was fully restored around midnight on Wednesday. Fenaka confirmed that out of the five generators supplying electricity to the island, only one was damaged.
The company stated that it worked diligently to identify and resolve issues affecting both the power plant building and its panels following the fire.
