Amir Saleem, Head of Programmes at privately-run television station RaajjeTV, has vowed that the station will not be silenced by threats or intimidation, reaffirming its commitment to press freedom amid growing concerns over the proposed bill aimed at tightening control over the media.

Speaking at a journalists’ protest held near the Parliament building titled the ‘final day’ protest, Amir declared that RaajjeTV will continue to broadcast live coverage of the demonstrations and that journalists will not stop writing freely, regardless of the political pressure being exerted.

Amir criticized recent claims made during a public forum that the bill would not impact social media. Citing a real-life example, he recounted witnessing an individual being taken into police custody for allegedly posting a derogatory word on social media in response to rising cigarette prices. He noted that the case was eventually dropped because authorities could not determine the identity of the poster.

Amir went on to assure that even if the legislation passes and is ratified by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, RaajjeTV will continue its operations without compromise, adding that, even if the station is burned down or if journalists face death threats, the station will not back down.

The station is currently facing the threat of legal action over a complaint related to comments made during a broadcast of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s gathering held on March 12. This is not the first time RaajjeTV has faced such pressure. During the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the station was subjected to repeated threats, heavy fines, arson attacks, and equipment damage.

Despite this history of intimidation, Amir emphasized that RaajjeTV remains resolute in its mission to uphold journalistic integrity and serve the public without fear.
