The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has issued a stark ultimatum to the current administration, demanding that the flats and land plots allocated during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration be distributed within the next month, warning that failure to do so will result in escalated protests.

MDP hosted a press conference on Thursday amid the surfacing of a case where attempts were made to allocate a plot of land in Hulhumalé Phase II to the brother of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, the Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), using forged documents.

Speaking at the presser, former state minister at the planning ministry, Akram Kamaludeen, said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu must take full responsibility for this issue.

Referring to the current government, Akram said that Muizzu changes his decisions when people start protesting against government decisions and other issues in the country. Akram noted that after public protests on Wednesday night, HDC's MD Fazul was suspended on Thursday.

Akram said that the flats and land plots allocated by the previous government must be distributed within the next month, and if not, MDP would take to the streets. He also called on the general public to take to the streets to claim their rights.

Akram said that swift action needs to be taken regarding the case of attempting to obtain a plot using forged documents. He stated that the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development would also have complete information regarding the matter and that action should be taken against the ministry as well. Akram criticized the fact that no action had been taken even though the issue had come to the government's attention in July.
