Flats will be accessible before next academic year: Pres. Muizzu
Parents are frustrated about unclear timelines for moving into flats, affecting their ability to decide where to enroll children for the upcoming school year

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the flats allocated under the ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ scheme will be ready for residents to move into before the start of next year’s academic year.
Many expect to relocate to the flats ahead of the school year. However, numerous recipients are expressing frustration, saying the government’s progress is slow and the situation remains unclear.
Parents in particular, are unsure how to handle school enrollment: they want to enroll their children in Hulhumalé schools if they can move into the flats, but in Malé schools if they cannot. Enrolling children in Malé and then later moving to the flats would result in lengthy daily commutes, prompting repeated public calls to make the flats available before the new academic year.
Amid these growing complaints, Muizzu told residents of Maafannu on Tuesday night that the flats would indeed be ready for occupation before schools open for the upcoming academic year.
The new school year is scheduled to begin on 27 January 2026.
The 4,000 social housing units built by the previous government had all structural work completed when the administration changed. The list of eligible recipients was also finalized. However, the current government initially opposed allocating the flats based on that list, announcing an investigation into certain issues.
After one and a half years in office, with the matter still unresolved and deemed not legally feasible, the government faced widespread criticism. In response, it decided to proceed with allocations according to the previous government’s list, announcing this decision at a press conference on 29 May 2025.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib earlier stated that the 4,000 flats would be handed over and ready for residents before the end of September 2025.
