The Public Accounts Committee of the People's Majlis has approved to conduct a criminal investigation into the compensation case where various parties were compensated by the Settlement Committee formed during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
During the Public Accounts Committee meeting held on Wednesday, pro-government lawmakers accused the previous administration of acting in a manner that undermined potential benefits to the state.
As such, they have approved to instruct the Prosecutor General to conduct a criminal investigation against former President Solih, former Economic Minister and main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and former Minister at the President's Office Ali Shiyam.
Further, the committee has decided that the agreements signed from 2019 to 2023 are null and void from their inception. They have approved to instruct the Attorney General to reclaim any compensation paid under these agreements back to the state. They have also approved to reclaim any compensation paid to any party in violation of the Public Finance Act.
Speaking regarding the decision, MP for South Hulhumalé Constituency Ahmed Shamheed stated that this is not being done because the state has incurred losses, but rather it is a political decision. He also questioned why only three individuals are being singled out when there were several on the Settlement Committee.
The matter was submitted to the committee by MP for Funadhoo Constituency Mohamed Mamdhooh. It was backed by MP for Kelaa Constituency Abdulla Shareef.
The Settlement Committee was dissolved by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 21 November 2024.
