Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received a heartfelt welcome from the residents of Bodufolhudhoo island, as he visited the island following an invitation from local members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The harbor area came alive with celebrations on Thursday evening, featuring decorative arches, national and party flags, and traditional welcome songs. A large crowd comprising residents young and old, gathered to greet the former president. Members of the Bodufolhudhoo Island Council, along with heads of various local institutions, also took part in the welcome.

Solih was accompanied by former Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and former MP for Alifushi constituency Mohamed Rasheed Hussain.

Celebrating development and engagement

During his visit, Solih is scheduled to hold meetings with MDP members on the island and visit elderly residents and individuals with special needs, reflecting his continued commitment to community engagement.

The Bodufolhudhoo Island Council has also announced plans to present a special award to the former president in recognition of the significant development achieved on the island during his administration.

Legacy of development

Solih’s tenure saw the launch of multiple key infrastructure and public service projects in Bodufolhudhoo.

These include:

  • The commencement of a water and sewerage system
  • Construction of a mosque accommodating 300 worshippers
  • Establishment of laboratory services at the local health center

Among these, residents widely regard the land reclamation project as the most transformative initiative. After nearly 30 years, this project finally made it possible for many residents to receive residential plots on their own island, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the community.

Solih is expected to conclude his visit and return to the capital, Malé City on Friday.
