The airport was officially opened on Sunday night with a vibrant ceremony featuring aerial displays and a light show. Solih noted that the new airport represents a major step forward for the northern atolls, positioning the region for faster economic growth and expanded connectivity. He underscored the need to strengthen Hanimaadhoo’s broader economic network and enhance tourism infrastructure to ensure the full benefits of the development are realized.
Solih also acknowledged India’s pivotal contribution to bringing the project to completion, emphasizing that such partnerships play a crucial role in advancing national development goals.
MDP President Abdulla Shahid also conveyed appreciation to India and Solih in connection with the airport’s opening. He highlighted that discussions with the Indian government regarding financial and technical support for the Hanimaadhoo project were conducted under Solih’s leadership.

Shahid described the inauguration as the successful culmination of an initiative that began during the previous administration, achieved through strong bilateral cooperation with India.
The Hanimaadhoo Airport development has been one of the most significant regional infrastructure projects in recent years.
However, the project initially faced criticism from opposition groups, with some alleging that it was intended to facilitate Indian military activity, claims that were repeatedly dismissed by both governments.
