A man has died from electrocution while attempting to steal transformer parts of the State Electric Company (STELCO) in Hulhumalé Phase II.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, an eye witness revealed that teams of Maldives Police Service (MPS) officers and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue were deployed to the scene, after a man got electrocuted while attempting to steal transformer parts near Hiyaa tower three (H3), in Hulhumalé Phase II.

The incident is to have occurred at the break of dawn, on Sunday.

RaajjeMV understands that the man was deceased even when he was taken to the hospital.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’, Managing Director of STELCO Hussain Fahmy revealed that this was a tragic incident.

The police institution revealed that the body was spotted by officers patrolling the streets of Hulhumalé Phase II, after midnight.

The deceased has been identified as a 27-year-old man.

He was found with injuries at around 4:07am on Sunday.

MPS is currently looking into the matter.

This comes after STELCO filed a case at MPS, regarding recent break-ins, vandalization and theft of their transformer parts.

Fahmy revealed that the issue of some individuals damaging the locks of their substations, turning off the transformers and stealing several parts of the transformers, recently came into the spotlight.

Stressing that the damage to transformers and theft of transformer parts had led to power outages reported from several parts of Hulhumalé on Thursday morning as well as Friday evening and night, Fahmy highlighted that this is a major obstruction of STELCO’s efforts to ensure the provision of round-the-clock power supply.

Further, he said that this is a big threat to the culprits as well.

Fahmy has urged relevant authorities to find and stop those indulging in these activities and take action against them and the people who buy the stolen parts.
