Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has urged all parties involved in the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the request by South Africa to deliver preliminary measures citing that Israel is in breach of the Genocide Convention, to abide by the court order.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister made this appeal in a post on social media platform ‘X’ on Friday.

Highlighting that the Maldivian government welcomes the ICJ order on the request by South Africa to deliver preliminary measures citing that Israel is in breach of the Genocide Convention, FM Zameer noted that this ruling demonstrates the power of international law.

Expressing hope that all parties involved in this ruling will abide by it, Foreign Minister Zameer stated that the government of Maldives and its people remain hopeful of the situation.

With this, he has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire to the ongoing conflict.

The government and people of Maldives have always stood with the people of Palestine.

The government strongly believes that a just and lasting solution can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State with pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The top United Nations court for handling disputes between states on Friday ordered Israel to take action to prevent acts of genocide as it’s heinous attacks continue in the Gaza Strip. However, the court did not demand an immediate ceasefire, which is what several across the globe are actively seeking.

ICJ in its ruling ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts in Gaza. The ruling required Israel to prevent and punish any public incitements to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and to preserve evidence related to any allegations of genocide there.

It also notes that Israel must take measures to improve the humanitarian situation for Palestinian civilians in the enclave.
