President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced his decision to install two more elevators in each tower of the Hiyaa flats constructed in Phase II of Hulhumalé.
Dr. Muizzu made this pledge while visiting residents of Hiyaa towers in Phase II, on Friday evening.
During the meeting, the President-elect stated that the incumbent government has allowed the incoming government to include what it wants to add to the state budget, to be proposed to the People’s Majlis for the upcoming year.
As such, the installation of two more elevators in all Hiyaa towers in Phase II, will be included in the state budget for 2024, according to the President-elect, in a bid to address one of the biggest problems facing the residents of Hiyaa flats.
One of the two lifts will be big enough to fit a stretcher and the other one will have the capacity to fit 14 individuals.
He assured the citizens that all arrangements will be made to fulfil this pledge.
The ‘Hiyaa’ housing scheme was one of the very first projects initiated in the second phase of Hulhumalé during former president Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
USD 430 million had been spent on the project under which 16 towers were built featuring two-bedroom apartments.
Some of these towers currently have three or four lifts. However, the lack of elevators has posed an issue for the residents.
Residents of the towers have at times complained that they have to stand in long queues to use the elevators.
