President Solih met the Maldivian athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games and Islamic Solidarity Games 2022 on Tuesday

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged local athletes competing in international competitions, to put in their best efforts to bring success and a good name to the country, in international sporting.

The president made this remark during a meeting held with Maldivian athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games and Islamic Solidarity Games 2022, on Tuesday.

During the meeting held at the President’s Office, the president stated that only a handful gets the “prestigious” opportunity to represent their country in international arenas, adding that this is an honor.

Further, he noted that the incumbent administration was working to provide the required training facilities and tools required to succeed in the global arena.

With this being said, President Solih stated that the government has worked hard over the last four years to develop sports in the Maldives.

As such, the president noted that he remains committed to seek opportunities for athletes without discrimination based on the sport the athlete plays.

The team presented the president with a "For the Oceans" jersey kit at the meeting. The kit was designed to incorporate elements of the ocean and the Maldives’ way of life.

46 Maldivian athletes and officials are set to attend the 2022 Commonwealth Games, scheduled from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, England.

In addition to this, the Fifth Islamic Solidarity Games are organized to be held in the city of Konya, Turkey from August 9 - 21.

A total of 62 officials and athletes from the Maldives will be in Turkey for the games.
