President Abdulla Yameen has become one of the leaders to have touched the World Cup’s trophy, as part of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour.

President Yameen lifted the trophy at a ceremony held on Wednesday night at the Galolhu stadium.

Speaking at the event, Yameen commended accomplishments made by local athletes and sportsmen and women.

“The Maldives have made significant developments in the field of sports, especially within the past four years” Yameen said speaking in reference to his tenure in office.

Authorities had closed off roads in preparation for the trophy’s arrival and for the events scheduled to take place as part of the trophy’s globetrot.
