Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture, conducted an irrigation program in Hoadehdhoo island of Gaafu Dhaal Atoll.

The Agriculture Ministry's irrigation program was conducted in Hoadehdhoo, from the first of March to 22 March.

This program was conducted to establish a system to use stored water for sustainable farming. As such, Irrigation systems were established in 10 fields for demonstration in the program.

Moreover, the Ministry also conducted awareness among farmers on the use of water, as part of the program. Information sessions were held for the farmers, including 10 participants of the irrigation program. These sessions were conducted from 6 March to 16 March.

This information program, that provided farmers information on the general public agricultural issues and ways to resolve them was called "Basic Agricultural Training Program".

While a total of 47 participants completed the training, a ceremony was held at the Hoadehdhoo School hall on March 21 to mark the completion of the program.

Ministry of Agriculture highlights that the objective of conducting such a program in Hoadehdhoo was to use modern technology to educate and interest farmers in such systems. The Ministry stated that this would help reduce the amount of water and food wasted in agricultural activities and enhance sustainable farming efforts.

The Agriculture Ministry also noted that the Maldives' Agricultural field is facing various challenges due to climate change. As such, the most affected was the land acquired for agricultural use, due to the prolonged weather and the extraction of water from the land to water the trees.
