Maldives on Sunday reported its first Covid-19 related death after nine consecutive days of no such fatalities.

The country's 214th victim has been identified by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) as a 59-year-old Maldivian woman who was being treated at the Covid Management Facility in Shaviyani atoll.

Doctors pronounced her dead at 3:05am on Sunday.

Of the total number of deaths to Covid-19, 164 have been reported thus far in 2021.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while three deaths have been reported so far this ongoing month.

Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.

With daily Covid-19 cases soaring above 1,000 into the beginning of May, authorities responded by strengthening Covid-19 precautionary measures and guidelines in place. However, due to declining case numbers over the recent month, authorities eased measures thrice round. The curfew in the capital region has been completely dissolved since, with individuals fully-vaccinated against Covid-19 who have observed 14 days since receiving their second vaccine dose, even allowed to travel to outlying atolls without the need to quarantine.
