By the third day Maldives resumed administering the India-sourced Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccination, the total number of persons to been fully vaccinated against the global pandemic has been pushed to 206,245.

Under the government’s “Covid-19 Dhifaau” vaccination drive, authorities administered a total of 6,674 vaccine doses on Tuesday, including 213 first doses and 6,461 second doses.

5,150 Greater Malé residents received vaccine shots from two mobile teams active across six vaccination centers in the capital region, whereas 1,524 atoll residents received doses from 193 vaccination centers spanning outlying atolls.

Tuesday’s first Covid-19 vaccine doses included 99 Greater Malé residents and 114 atoll residents. Second doses were administered to 5,051 living in the capital region and 1,410 residing in outlying atolls on Tuesday as well.

The number of persons who have received first doses nationwide sits at 317,762.

The incumbent administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the “Covid-19 Dhifaau” inoculation drive on February 1.

Authorities resumed administering the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccination on July 4 after months, on an appointment-basis. Vaccinations across outlying atolls are also proceeding at a swift pace, with the public health authorities working to dispatch Covishield doses to island where vaccine stocks have run out.

Covishield second doses are currently open for those who received first doses in February and March.

Announcing eases to Covid-19 restrictions nationwide on Wednesday, the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) revealed that 35.15 percent of the Maldives population has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 thus far. Of this, 35.15 percent of those eligible in the Maldives has been fully vaccinated, whereas the percentage of persons to have received first doses is currently at 55.87 percent.

Maldives is also expected to receive an adequate supply of AstraZeneca vaccine doses between July 12 – 20.
