There are various factors that exist within Maldivian political and social spheres that opposition politicians need to factor in as they move forward with their reform work, said former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam.

He said at an opposition rally on Monday night that there are various factors that affect the allied reform parties’ efforts against the current government.

Aslam said that the current political ‘landscape’ in the country is extremely unstable and subject to constant change. With that said, he highlighted the success of the opposition in 2008, which ousted a longstanding president through the ballot box, adding that he hopes the elections in 2018 will prove to be ‘even smoother’.

“We must learn to be accepting and garner integrity” Aslam said “It was us that united with those that had once done us wrong, and it is us calling for free and fair elections, and we must be careful not to let out political objectives erode our sense of righteousness”.

He further said those elected to office must ride above their personal desire to maintain their tenure and willingly work towards doing all they can for the betterment of the people.

Aslam said that the current constitution, despite having been drafted by an administration he was part of, requires several changes and this transcends to statutory bodies as well.

He concluded his address having said that solutions to the aforementioned instability in the country comes soon and are permanent.
