The first hearing in the domestic violence trial against Kedhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa has been cancelled.
While the hearing was scheduled for 11am on Monday, Criminal Court announced its cancellation as the judge overseeing the case was on sick leave for the day.
The domestic violence assault case was filed by Easa’s ex-wife Asra Naseem on May 18. While she accused him for assaulting her and threatening their child, Asra has made attempts to withdraw the case saying it was filed in the heat of the moment.
This request was however rejected, and the case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office who charged the Kendhikulhudhoo MP with assault on June 3 under Section 120 (b) (2) of the Penal Code, pertaining to Section 120 (a) (1).
Over the past weekend, reports surfaced that Easa’s ex-wife had penned a letter to the PG in her latest bid to stop the trial. While the PG Office has confirmed the letter, it is yet to share any details. There have been some questions over its real sender.
The Office had also requested for MP Easa’s arrest, it was denied by the Criminal Court citing no grounds.
