The recent implementation of the Maldives Police Service Act was the “most significant” upgrade to policing in the Maldives, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During a statement made in commemoration of the 88th anniversary of establishing policing service in the country, the president noted that since the re-establishment as a civil service institution 17 years ago, the most important upgrade of policing in the country was the enactment of the Maldives Police Service Act (Law No. 34/2020).
During his statement President Solih commended the police institution and expressed pride in the institution’s “outstanding” contributions and service to the public.
Highlighting that MPS has been offering “exemplary” services, which the president noted to have increased in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Solih said that the “tireless” commitment of officers is an “invaluable” national service.
Further, he added that the government is confidence that the new law will provoke the “much-needed” reform to MPS.
Ratified during December 2020 following approval from the People’s Majlis during its third session of 2020, the legislation carries the purpose of enhancing police responsibility and grants the necessary legal protection to MPS and police officers in carrying out their duties
Noting that the newly enacted law will promote professional standards within the MPS, President Solih highlighted that the law will provoke community-oriented policing under a decentralized governance system.
During his statement on the occasion the president also conveyed greetings of the occasion to Imran Abdulla, the Minister of Home Affairs, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed as well as officers of all ranks.
In conclusion Solih assured the government’s commitment to continue supporting the progress of policing in Maldives.
