Sunny Umar, a prominent businessman in the tourism sector who is accused of sexually abusing several children, has been taken into police custody.

He was detained on Monday evening, and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) confirmed his arrest to RaajjeMV later that night.

The police institution has not disclosed the location of his arrest. Although they did not comment further, a reliable source informed RaajjeMV that he was apprehended at the airport.

According to some sources, it is believed he was arrested while attempting to flee the Maldives.

Despite facing allegations of child sexual abuse, he had previously left the country. He returned to the Maldives on Monday, and upon arrival, instead of being immediately arrested, he was escorted by police for questioning.

The police stated that he was summoned to the Family and Child Protection Department for questioning regarding the allegations. When asked whether he had been arrested in connection with these allegations, the police declined to respond.

Sunny Umar is accused of sexually abusing a child related to his wife’s family.

RaajjeMV has also received information that he admitted to this within his family.

These allegations surfaced on social media on November 28, after which he departed for New Delhi on an Air India flight.
