Maldives has reported the 65th death from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that deceased is a 79-year-old Maldivian woman who was admitted at the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital for treatment.
Doctors pronounced her dead at around 7:17pm on Thursday.
The coronavirus pandemic has claimed another life in the Maldives a fortnight after the last victim was identified.
The 64th victim, also a local, died from complications of the fatal infection in early march. In early March, authorities reported three Covid-19 fatalities, making Thursday’s case the fourth.
This comes at a time Covid-19 fatalities have doubled in count since January 2021. As such, while four deaths were observed in January, the number increased to 10 during February.
With a spike in case count, hospitalizations have also increased in comparison to what was observed during the second Covid-19 wave in 2020.
HPA stressed that fewer people visit the flu clinic now despite having Covid-19 symptoms, which in turns show a lesser flu positivity rate despite daily infections spiking.
The public health authority has since enforced stricter measures to subdue the ongoing third Covid-19 peak and curb virus transmission across the epicenter, Malé City.
