Maldives Police Service has confirmed that the man found dead in the harbor region of Kulhudhuffushi City, died from drowning and that there was no involvement of another person.
Mohamed Hassan, 36, of Daisy Fehi, was found dead in the northern harbor of Kulhudhuffushi City at around 08:17am on 11 September 2024.
Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday to brief media regarding the findings of the case, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih said that the police received information about the incident at 08:17am on 11 September 2024, when someone called to provide information.
Upon receiving the information, a team of officers was dispatched to the region immediately and with the help of some of the island residents, retrieved the body from the water.
At the time, it was noted that Mohamed Hassan showed no signs of life. He was immediately taken to Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.
Doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Sharing some of their findings regarding the case, Samih noted that Mohamed Hassan's motorcycle was found parked not far from where his body was found at sea.
Samih said that according to information collected with the help of CCTV footage, Mohamed Hassan was seen in the harbor region around 01:35 am on 11 September 2024. He is to have met and talked to police officers at around 02:29am. At around 02:55am, he was seen crouching in the middle of the harbor road, and shortly after, Mohamed Hassan was seen strolling along the harbor. He is to have slipped, regained his composure and remained still for a while. This was at around 02:57am. Since then, he was not seen returning.
Further, Samih added that after Mohamed Hassan's movements were last seen, no other person's movements were observed in that area until his body was found in the sea. Considering what was seen in the footage, it is believed that Mohamed Hassan fell into the water at around 02:57am.
Samih said that the complete investigation of the case will be wrapped up once the permanent autopsy results are received, which have not been received yet. However, based on the findings so far, there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of any other party in Mohamed Hassan's death.
