Central Police, who have law-enforcement jurisdiction over islands within Dhaalu, Faafu and Meemu atolls, are now investigated the cases of two pregnant minors reported from the same island.

Police have revealed that two separate reports had been lodged with them in relation to the two young girls, and that intensive investigation efforts were now underway to hold those responsible for impregnating the children accountable for their crimes.

The first case was reported to Police on 31 December 2020. The second case was reported on 19 January 2021, and police have since arrested a 22-year-old local man in relation to the case. He was arrested on 18 February. The name and address of the man arrested in this case has not been revealed in order to protect the identity of the pregnant young child.

Police have revealed that both cases are currently under active investigation in association with child protection and social service authorities.

Maldives Police Service continue to investigate crimes against children, especially those that involve sexual abuse, under special policies. Many such cases have been reported in the country over the past year, with the social impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic taking center stage as more and more vulnerable persons are exposed to domestic and familial abuse while isolated within their homes.
