The Ministry of Education revealed that the A'Level examinations scheduled for May and June this year had been cancelled by Pearson on 3 February, in light of the severity of the global Covid-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.
The Education Ministry further announced that while this year's A'Level exams have been cancelled, the Ministry were currently discussions to determine how to conduct academic evaluations for the students who will be unable to take the exams in May/June. The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in the UK is set to release a decision on how to evaluate such students on 22 February.
Further, the Ministry of Education has announced that the A'Level examinations set for October and November this year will continue as scheduled, and that no changes have thus been brought to the application process for the exams.
The Education Ministry has thus asked all independents and school students set to sit their A'Levels in October/November to continue preparing for the examinations as they will be conducted according to schedule later in the year.
In addition to this, the Education Ministry has revealed that they are currently engaging in discussions with Edexcel to determine whether students could be evaluated based on the qualification without them having to sit an exams. The Ministry has reassured that they will be taking into consideration the opinions of students and schools in the Maldives when choosing an alternative mode of evaluation for those unable to sit their A'Level exams in May/June this year.
Despite the cancellation of the May/June 2021 A'Level Exams, the ministry has announced that the O'Level exams set for May and June this year will be conducted as per the schedule. The O'Level exam series being conducted in May/June will see students that had their October/November O'Level exams cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 be given the opportunity to sit their missed tests.
Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali revealed that no changes had been brought to the international examination schedules for the Cambridge O'Level examinations, and that as such, O'Level examinations that were cancelled in the Maldives in October/November last year will be conducted according to schedule in May and June.
Previous statistics made public by the Ministry of Education detail that 1,529 students are set to sit their Cambridge O'Level examinations in May/June 2021.
