Parliament to discuss education bill on Wednesday
Pro-government MP Ali Saleem proposed the bill.
The bill strives to meet international cultural, economic, and social policies.

Parliament will on Wednesday discuss a bill to expand on the Constitution’s 36th article, right to education.

Pro-government MP Ali Saleem, representative of the Funadhoo constituency, proposed the bill on Tuesday.

The bill aims to develop Maldives’ educational framework in line with international cultural, economic, and social policies, and to create equal opportunities for children.

As the bill stands currently, it carries 19 articles and 57 clauses, and primarily focuses on increasing the quality of education available at local schools and instilling Islamic values in students.

Article 36 of the Constitution guarantees free primary and secondary education to every citizen, and states that education ‘shall strive to inculcate obedience to Islam’.
