Covid-19: Maldives reports 51 new cases, 49 recoveries

Maldives reported 51 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday.

Nightly statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal that the new infections were confirmed out of the 3,168 samples tested between 6pm Monday and 6pm Tuesday.

Out of the 51 new cases, 32 were confirmed from the Greater Malé Region, 17 from operational resorts and the remaining two from residential islands.

Tuesday’s cases include 33 Maldivians, three nationals from India, two from brazil, one Russian national, one French national, one Nepalese, two nationals from Sri Lanka and seven Bangladeshi nationals.

29 men and 22 women contracted the virus over the past 24 hours.

The new cases also include a toddler aged one and two elders, a man and a woman, between 70 – 80 years of age.

With the cases reported on Tuesday, the Maldives Covid-19 tally has risen to 14,633.

Further, with 49 additional recoveries reported by sundown on Tuesday, the country has observed a total of 13,615 virus-stricken patients having recovered from the infection, since it surfaced from a resort on 7 March, 2020.

This means that the island nation’s recovery rate has risen to 93.04 percent.

Out of the 962 active coronavirus cases in the country, 73 patients are currently hospitalized for treatment, one less than the previous day. 165 patients are seeking treatment at isolation facilities nationwide.

525 of the active cases are in the Greater Malé Region, 295 in operational resorts, 119 in outlying atolls, seven in liveaboard vessels, 13 in islands under development and three in industrial islands.

With 49 patients having succumbed to complications from the virus, Maldives mortality rate from Covid-19 is at 0.33 percent.

A majority of the infections confirmed in the island nation are contributed by Maldivians at 62.66 percent, with 9,169 locals having tested positive thus far. In addition, 3,459 Bangladeshis, 863 nationals from India, 389 Sri Lankan Nationals and 172 nationals from Nepal have also tested positive for the pandemic. Maldives Covid-19 tally includes 69 Russian nationals who tested positive since arriving in Maldives, 50 nationals from the United Kingdom as well as 462 others.
