Minister for Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof has announced that the Ekuveni Synthetic Track in the west of capital Male' City is set to be inaugurated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a ceremony on Tuesday night, following the completion of work to remodel the track with synthetic.

The work to remodel Ekuveni track with synthetic concluded around new year, and the sports minister joined members of the National Athletics Team to practice on the track last Wednesday.

President Solih also recently visited the Ekuveni Synthetic track following renovation.

Mahloof said that the new, state-of-the-art synthetic running track would be officially inaugurated by President Solih at an event Tuesday night, and that the ceremony would also include an athletics event, a cricket event, and a showcase by differently-abled children as well.

Work to renovate the Male' running track began after 24 years on 22 June 2020, with RKL Group beginning concrete work on the track ion 17 September under the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Once the concrete work was complete, Police Welfare Corporation (POLCO) began laying synthetic on the track in November, with their work being inaugurated by Minister Mahloof and Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla back in November. The Ekuveni track remodeling program was completed with much assistance from the Indian government.

In the past, Male' Ekuveni track was used as a football track by second and third division teams to play matches and host tournaments. Members of the public use Ekuveni track as a space for jogging, running, exercise and other athletic pursuits, and people had been facing difficulties for some time as the uneven ground on the track is prone to flooding after rain. The new synthetic track is designed to increase convenience for those who wish to use Ekuveni as an exercise space.

A synthetic running track has also been developed in Hulhumale', which is being used by the National Athletics Team as a practice ground and venue for competitive events.
