Out of the 2,340 samples tested from 6pm Sunday to 6pm Monday, 16 tested positive for coronavirus.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that 11 out of the new Covid-19 cases were reported from the Greater Malé Region, whereas four were confirmed from operational resorts and one from a residential island.

With this development, the total number of coronavirus cases confirmed in the Maldives has reached 13,660.

An additional 10 recoveries reported by sundown on Monday has pushed the total number of recoveries in the Maldives to 13,082.

The country’s active Covid-19 cases have risen to 523 from 517 on Monday.

While 33 Covid-19 patients are currently hospitalized for treatment, the number of hospitalized patients currently sits at 35.

Covid-19 has claimed 48 lives in the island nation thus far, which means that the country’s mortality rate from the virus is at 0.35 percent.

Maldives responded to the first case of community transmission in the capital city, by implementing a full lockdown across the region and a partial lockdown across the scatter of islands. About a month later, following positive results of the lockdown, authorities began lifting it in phases, in May. During the third phase of lockdown easing, cases began surging once more and authorities responded by implementing more measures, including a curfew.

Case numbers began gradually decreasing after a few weeks and the curfew has since been lifted. However, Maldives still remains in a state of public health emergency, which is set to expire in January.
