Maldives reported 35 new cases of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic on Saturday.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the new cases were confirmed out of the 2,122 samples tested between 6pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.

34 of the new infections were detected in the Greater Malé Region whereas the remaining case was discovered from a residential island.

With this development, the Maldives Covid-19 tally sits at 13,618.

Further, 24 additional recoveries reported by sundown on Saturday has pushed the total number of recoveries reported in the island nation to 13,050, this is 95.83 percent of the virus tally.

Maldives currently has 512 active coronavirus cases, out of which 39 patients are hospitalized for treatment and 106 patients are seeking treatment at isolation facilities.

The country’s mortality rate sits at 0.35 percent, with 48 patients having succumbed due to complications.

With 8,581 cases, Maldivians contribute 63 percent of the total case count, followed by 3,307 cases from Bangladeshi nationals who make up 24.28 percent of the cases.

Further, 794 Indian national have also contracted the virus, making up 5.83 percent of the Covid-19 tally. 360 nationals from Sri Lanka, 162 from Nepal, 52 from Russia and 41 Chinese nationals have also been infected with the pandemic in the island nation since the first few cases were confirmed on March 7.

There are currently 512 active cases, including 379 cases in the greater Male’ region, 36 active cases in outlying atolls, 70 cases in tourist establishments, 25 cases in island under development as well as three cases in industrial islands.

Saturday’s cases are the highest daily rise in infections reported over the past week.

While 19 new cases were reported on Sunday, the lowest daily increase followed on Monday, at eight new infections. On Tuesday, Maldives confirmed 23 new infections, followed by 13 Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. Thursday saw 21 new infections and the number rose to 25 on Friday.

Maldives saw a second surge in Covid-19 cases after it entered the third phase of the lockdown ease plan in May. However, cases have been gradually decreasing since September. This had led to eases on Covid-19 restrictions, especially in the capital where a majority of the Covid-19 cases are being detected.
