Super United Sports (SUS) played and won its first-ever match of the Dhivehi Premier League on Sunday, against last year’s runner-up’s Club Eagles.
While the DPL began on Sunday evening, SUS played against Eagles in the second match of the season with a 1-0 score.
The only goal of the game was scored at the 11th minute, with SUS’ forward Victor Rodriquez taking advantage of a mistake by the Eagle’s goal keeper.
Club Eagles, who won the FA Charity Shield Cup against last season’s champions on Tuesday, had multiple opportunities to equalize the game during the second half. One such notable opportunity was Mohamed Naim’s strong attack at the 66th minute, which was denied skillfully by SUS’ goalkeeper Mirzokhid Mamatkhonov.
Two other goal opportunities were wasted as well, by Eagles’ Haisham Hassan.
Speaking to the media after the match, SUS’ coach Ahmed Nashid praised the players for the performance shown. He stressed that the match was a success for both the club and him, adding delight in having beaten a team such a strong team.
Club Eagles’ Mohamed “Mohan” Shiyaz expressed disappointment in the players performances. He highlighted that the lack of experienced players as an issue, as well as the fact that their star forward, Ahmed Rizwan, was out of the game due to an injury.
SUS will play against Da Grande Sports Club next Sunday, while Club Eagles’ next match will be against TC Sports Club that night.
The first match of the Dhivehi Premier League was between Maziya Recreation and Sports Club and United Victory on Sunday evening. Maziya, champions of last season, won the match with a 4-0 score.
