Democracy is not in infancy, just not perfected: Abdullah Kamaluddin

Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Abdullah Kamaluddin has stated that Maldives needed to work on an agreed upon roadmap in order to perfect the democratic system.

Speaking in Thursday night's opposition rally in M. Kunooz, the former Minister during the President Maumoon administration, he said that from 2004 onward, the reform agenda introduced was not concluded by introducing a new Constitution. Kamaluddin added that with the Constitution, they had brought in a roadmap for the nation as well.

"I find it difficult to accept that this is young democracy. The reform movement that we started from 2014 onward, the only part of the reform agenda was not just introducing a Constitution. Those who were there, will remember that we made a roadmap in addition to passing the Constitution," he said.

However, he said that as the roadmap was not enacted on, it cannot be said that Maldives was a young democracy. Kamaluddin said that the current situation clearly showed that we need reform in the nation.

Therefore, Kamaluddin said that we can say that democracy in the Maldives is yet to be perfect. He noted that the situation in 2004 was drastically different to that of the current one and needed a new roadmap for reform.
