Maldives reports 39 new cases of the coronavirus infection on Sunday.
While the cases were confirmed from the 2,267 samples tested within 24 hours, it pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 12,198.
37 of the cases were detected from the capital region, while one each were confirmed from an outlying island and industrial island.
With an additional 57 recoveries reported on Sunday, the country’s recovery rate is at 93.36 percent with a total of 12,321 patients having recovered from the virus. Mortality rate is at 0.36 percent with 47 deaths.
There are 823 active Covid-19 cases across the island nation, with 642 of the cases in the greater Male’ region. Further, there are 31 active cases is outlying atolls, 52 cases in tourist establishments, 96 cases in island under development and two active cases in industrial islands.
71 patients are receiving treatment at hospitals, eight less than the previous day.
Out of the 13,198 coronavirus infections confirmed in the island nation since March, 62.95 percent are locals. 24.72 percent of the total cases are Bangladeshis; the largest migrant worker population in the country.
While Maldives first Covid-19 cases were confirmed from a resort in March, a community transmission was detected on April 15. This led to a complete lockdown in the capital, as well as a partial lockdown across the country with travel between islands banned.
Lockdown easing began towards the end of May. While the country’s borders were closed prior to the detection of a community transmission on March 27, they were reopened during the third phase in July.
There was a second surge in cases after Maldives entered the third phase of lockdown easing, however, there has been a gradual decrease in daily cases from September.
