The total number of Covid-19 cases confirmed from Hoandedhdhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll has reached 44.

With the two new cases reported from the island on Thursday, the number rose to 44 and four patients have also seen full recoveries from the infection.

There are currently 40 active cases in the island out of which two are receiving treatment at the isolation facility in Gaaf Alif atoll.

A total of 344 samples have been collected for Covid-19 testing from the island, out of which results are pending for 50 samples.

The island council has since revealed that all patients are doing well. Sources report that 32 residences on the island have been placed in quarantine as well.

While Hoandedhdhoo island has the greatest number of cases outside the greater Malé region, its first few cases were detected earlier in September and the island was placed under monitoring on September 4. Authorities confirmed a local transmission a day later and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged residents to cooperate in their efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

When the island went into monitoring, two cases had been confirmed from the four individuals who were under home quarantine as mandated after traveling from capital Malé City.

Those found in violation of quarantine orders will be fined up to MVR 5,000, authorities recently decided.
