Maldives reported 70 cases of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic on Monday.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the new cases include 48 Maldivians and 22 foreigners.
65 out of the new cases were detected in the Greater Malé Region whereas the remaining five were detected from residential islands.
The total Covid-19 case count in the Maldives has risen to 9,243.
Health authorities also reported 210 recoveries from the infection, by 6pm Monday. The new recoveries mean that the total number of recovered Covid-19 patients in the Maldives has been pushed to 7,536.
Maldives currently has 1,668 active cases of the virus, out of which 834 patients are currently seeking treatment at isolation facilities, which is 253 patients less than the previous day.
Monday also saw a decrease in patients hospitalized for treatment. As such, while the number was at 113 on Sunday, there are 105 coronavirus-stricken patients in hospital currently.
While Covid-19 cases were being discovered in the Greater Malé Region mostly after the first case of community transmission was confirmed in the region on April 15, the virus has since spread to islands after individuals were allowed to travel from the virus’s epicenter, Malé City to residential islands. As such, infections have been detected from individuals who traveled to outlying islands and were tested after the expiration of their quarantine period.
There are active cases in 21 residential islands currently and 32 resorts with the inclusion of 22 tourists and 50 resort workers.
Further, health authorities have also placed monitoring measures in a number of islands, currently under monitoring are Hoandedhdhoo and Madaveli island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll and Manadhoo island in Noonu atoll. There are 36 Covid-19 cases in Hoandedhdhoo island.
