Maldives has reported the highest daily rise in Covid-19 cases in a week.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reported 121 new cases of the global pandemic on Sunday, out of which 102 were confirmed in the Greater Malé Region and 19 were detected in residential islands.
The new cases include 75 Maldivians and 46 foreigners.
This pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 9,173.
HPA also reported 271 additional recoveries from the virus, pushing the total number of coronavirus-stricken patients who have seen full recoveries, to 7,326.
With the new developments, Maldives currently has 1,809 active cases of the virus, out of which 113 patients are hospitalized for treatment, which is three less than the previous day.
Further, 1,087 patients remain at isolation facilities, which is an increase compared to the 908 isolated patients from Saturday.
While Maldives saw a steady decline in cases over the past week, with 83 cases being reported on September 7 and the highest being reported on September 9 at 93, Sunday saw a rise of over 100 cases. Over the past week, 589 individuals tested positive for the infection.
HPA also revealed that there are active cases in 25 residential islands and 32 resorts with the inclusion of 21 tourists and 48 resort workers. There are 99 active cases in residential islands including 80 locals and 19 foreigners.
The highest number of Covid-19 cases to have been reported in a residential island is from Hoandedhdhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, where there are 36 active cases.
