A 32-year-old man has been remanded until sentencing, over allegations of child abuse.

Ibrahim Nadheem Solih is accused of continuously abusing a child while being in "a position of trust." He was arrested on July 25.

Noting that he was initially given a 15-day remand by the Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo Magistrate Court, police on Thursday said that he was remanded until sentencing on August 8.

The court said that he poses a threat to children if released from remand, as well as that it will give him the chance to intimidate witnesses.

The court also noted that there is enough evidence to press charges against Nadheem in the case.

Police also said that work is underway to forward the case for prosecution, and urged parents and guardians to be aware of predators online noting an increase in offenses involving children including exploitation and grooming via the internet.

While there has been an increase in sexual offences against children being reported, all recent suspects have been remanded for the duration of the investigations and trials.
