Most of the senior police officers are accused of being involved in the 2012 coup

The Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed has expressed complete faith in the current executive team of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s “Fala Surukhee” programme on Thursday night, CP Hameed noted that the officers who took part in the 7th February coup d’état during 2012, have learned.

As such, the Police Commissioner noted that the institution had missed taking action on individual police officers who took part in overthrowing the Nasheed administration, adding that these things need to be investigated under the legal system.

While most of the current officers serving in senior positions are accused of being involved in the 2012 coup, many believe that true institutional reform cannot be brought with these officers remaining in their positions.

In response to this, CP Hameed stated that these things will be settled under the set procedures and guidelines, adding that he has full trust in the current executive team.

Highlighting his strong belief that officers employed at the institution will not repeat such an act, CP Hameed stated that the officers who took part in the coup have learned from mistakes.

Earlier, Minister of Home Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdulla had also assured the public that a lot of efforts are being put in the work to ensure the incidents of 7th February 2012 do not repeat.

Further speaking on the programme, CP Hameed gave assurance that they are investigating different cases of offenses being carried out through social media platforms and added that adequate measures will be taken in these cases.

MPS is seeking assistance from institutions in compliance with international laws, to investigate such cases related to social media crimes.

CP Hameed noted that criminal action has been taken in such cases, some of which have even been sent for prosecution.

The institution has observed cases of harassment, cyber-bullying, defamation, expressing opinions on social media that will churn unrest, cases of threatening and hate speech as well.

These cases are being investigated by the authority and legal action will be taken accordingly, assured the Police Commissioner.
