Dr. Ibrahim Didi, former President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has stated that Maldives Police Service (MPS) is now fully under political influence.

Speaking in RaajjeTV’s “Fala Suruhee” program, Dr. Didi, said MPS can no longer be labelled as an independent institution. He said the institution was fully under political influence of President Abdullah Yameen, adding that most of their decisions had contravened the laws.

Dr. Didi further said the institution had merely become an agency implementing policies as dictated by the President. He added that he did not see the institution fulfilling their other obligations.

He said the actions of President Yameen had only eroded public faith in the whole institution.

Dr. Didi noted that MPS has prevented Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from meeting Party members. He described this as an unconstitutional act. Adding the Police were well aware of their legal mandates, Dr. Didi said any and all actions of the Police have to be well within that mandate.

“The public has no faith in the Police. Police is currently hijacked by the Government of President Abdullah Yameen,” he said.
