The People’s Majlis has passed to recommend the dismissal of Ahmed Sulaiman, President of the National Integrity Commission (NIC), to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

58 members of the parliament voted in favor of passing to propose Sulaiman’s dismissal from his post as the commission’s president.

Following the parliament’s probe into the dismissal of four NIC members, three of the members at the commission turned in their resignation.

The members that resigned are; Vice President Hassaan Hameed and members Khadheeja Abdulla and Ahmed Ameen.

NIC and the parliament Committee on National Security Services had declared that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) was not found to be negligent in the murder case of Minivan News Journalist Ahmed Rilwan, during a meeting on October 4 last year.

In a report compiled by the parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions which reviewed the matter, the committee stated that the decision was not reached through thorough investigations.

The report further notes that the commission was ordered to investigate the case of police officers showing force and manhandling a civilian at Ujaalaage in Maafannu district of the capital city, after the case was submitted at the Committee on National Security Services.

However, the committee has since stressed that the commission had failed to complete investigations into the case, as eight months have passed since.

The members who resigned from the commission as well as NIC’s President, Sulaiman was appointed to their posts during the former administration of incarcerated ex-President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
