Choppy seas have caused boats to sink
Sea travelers have been urged to check the meteorology updates before setting off

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has urged caution against adverse weather conditions, at a time several sea incidents are being reported.

As such, the authority revealed that five sea incidents were reported to the MNDF’s Coastguard Maritime Rescue Coordination Center within the past 24 hours and that this is being caused by choppy seas, heavy rain showers and strong winds Maldives has been experiencing.

Maldives Meteorological Service had earlier predicted squally weather conditions across most parts, and urged caution when travelling.

Some of the incidents reported to the authority include life-threatening incidents as well, such as sunken boats.

Sea travelers have been urged to check the latest updates with the Maldives Meteorological Service before beginning their journeys. They are also urged to check if all the safety equipment is in check, onboard their vessels.

The authority has specifically urged cargo vessels to be extra vigilant when travelling at night time.

Sea incidents are to be reported to MNDF coastguard’s toll-free number 191 without delay.
