The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has commenced an internal inquiry to find out whether there was any influence inside the PGO in relation to the biggest case of graft recorded in the history of Maldives, involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s “Fala Suruhee” program on Thursday night, PG Hussain Shameem revealed that they are expecting to receive a report on the inquiry, being conducted by a committee comprised of three members, within a week.

The report will unveil if there was any such influences and any issues or “weaknesses” highlighted in the report will be addressed, assured the PG.

Shameem highlighted that they are aware of the accusations linking the office to the embezzlement, being investigated by the Presidential Inquiry Commission on Asset Recovery, which includes the PGO and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The PG noted with guarantee that the work into the case is currently not facing any such influences and should they observe any influences, measures will be taken accordingly, said Shameem.

While the inquiry commission is yet to publicize a list of those involved in the scandal, the Maldives Police Service revealed that some members of the current parliament as well as previous parliamentarians were implicated in the embezzlement. These claims have been brushed off and refuted by some lawmakers.
