The People’s Majlis has begun debating on an emergency motion submitted over the “verbal attack” on ex-president Dr. Mohamed Waheed.

MP for Ungoofaaru constituency, Mohamed Waheed presented the emergency motion, accusing the ex-president of fibbing, the ex-president claimed that him and wife Ilham Hussain were stalked and attacked verbally early Sunday morning, while they were out for a morning exercise.

33 members who took part in the vote approved to debate on the emergency motion.

Debates began during Monday’s parliamentary sitting.

MP Waheed noted that the short-term president, is threatening to bring harm to an individual after fibbing that the individual had attacked him and his wife.

Accusing the ex-president, who came into power after then president, Mohamed Nasheed was ousted through a coup d’état on February 7, 2012 to have been a part of it, MP Waheed noted that Dr. Waheed continued to bring harm and suffering for the people even after coming into power.

The parliamentarian stated that Dr. Waheed is using his power and influence to file a report with the police and fibbing about something said by someone.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) launched an investigation into the claim by the former president, who stated that the individual was associated with the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) security personnel were present at the time of the incident, the former president noted via a statement.

Waheed took office after Nasheed resigned and was the now Parliament Speaker’s running mate during the 2008 presidential elections. He was the Vice President of the Nasheed administration and has long been labelled as a “traitor” as Nasheed asserted that he was forced to step down through a coup.
