The People’s Majlis has on Tuesday approved Aminath Ameena Naeem to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

Ameena, commonly known as Ana, won the last vacant seat at the commission with the votes of 63 lawmakers.

While President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had forwarded a list of 15 nominees to the parliament, a list of seven candidates was passed by its committee on independent institutions. Ana was on top of the committee’s list, followed by Mohamed Fazeen from RaajjeTV.

However, the parliament did not call for a vote on any other candidates after Ana secured the seat. The vote is taken in order of the names on the list, which is arranged by the committee following its vetting process.

Ana, who earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism, is currently a senior editor at VTV. She picked up the journalism award, twice.

Broadcom comprises of seven members out of which four seats became vacant after Fathmath Zaina’s removal and three members resigned, back in 2019. Mariyam Waheedha, Ali Yoosuf and Ahmed Gais were appointed to the commission last December, with Waheedha elected president and Gais as vice president.
