The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has extended the suspension of congregational prayers at mosques in the capital and resorts up to April 18.
Authorities announced the decision to suspend prayer gatherings at mosques in the capital and resorts from 18-28 March, as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus. This was extended thrice, first to April 4, then to 11th and now to April 18.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs said that the decision was reached following the counsel of the Fatwa Council and Islamic scholars, as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus in Maldives.
In addition, the ministry said that the same procedures will follow in any island that is placed under lockdown.
Despite the suspension of congregational prayers at mosques, the ministry urges all to pray five times a day.
This is one of the many measures taken by the government in order to curb a Covid-19 spread in the country. Government offices have been closed since March 19, while schools and all other educational institutes are also closed.
