Maldives Police Service (MPS) has extended the remand period for Male’ City Council Member Zaidhul Ameen by an additional 15 days. He was arrested on January 13th on blackmail charges.
His remand was last extended on March 7th by 13 days. He was transferred to house arrest after his remand was extended by three times. Zaidh was transferred back to Police custody on February 22nd.
In February, he released a statement making strong allegations against the Maldives Police Service (MPS). He says that investigative officers are attempting to coerce him into providing a false statement against the PPM leader, with officers also claiming that his arrest “is vital for Maumoon’s arrest.”
Zaidhul Ameen’s statement also added that Assistant Commissioner of Police Nawaz had consistently requested him to issue a statement claiming that Maumoon was conspiring against the Government and the hard disk was with President Maumoon. He said that if his statement did not reflect this, then he risked facing a long jail term.
