Parliament Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has tested negative for Covid-19.

The speaker had to undergo the test as he had returned from the United Kingdom on March 14, and authorities on Tuesday decided to test all UK arrivals between March 14-19; UK was added to the Maldives’ Covid-19 travel advisory list on March 19.

The decision came after three Maldivians that returned from UK and were being quarantined in places designated by the government, tested positive for Covid-19. While a fourth Maldivian that returned from UK tested positive on Wednesday, this individual returned from the UK as well.

Noting that authorities had not decided to test passengers from UK at the time of his return, Nasheed had on Wednesday stated that he was prepared to undergo the test. The test was conducted later that day, with the People’s Majlis sharing a video of the procedure via Twitter.

While all arrivals to the Maldives are being quarantined since March 22, they are to be tested for coronavirus before release.
